230th anniversary of Black Sea Fleet

13th of May is an important day for Sevastopol. In the year 1783 a small fleet

Great Russian Empress Katherine the II had ordered commander
of Azov Sea Fleet to find the place for a new base.
Shores of the Crimean
peninsula were a good place to stay.

A month later Katherine the II had signed a decree about the foundation
of Black Sea Fleet and the new city for its main base.
City called the Sevastopol; this means “the city of glory”.

Yesterday we have celebrated the 230th anniversary of Black Sea Fleet.
It was a beautiful performance: navy parade in the bay;
flags and orchestras on the central streets; free entrance to the
warships and a beautiful concert and a firework in the evening.

Yellow, red, green and blue sparkles in the violet sky and their flickering mirror in the dark waters of the Sevastopol Bay;
the sounds of the brass band and the scent of flowering acacia over the boulevard.
A wonderful day of the seaside city!
